The purpose of Orbit
Orbit has been created to provide life & health actuaries with their own portable software to use as part of their actuarial toolkit. Orbit is aimed at individual actuaries.

Orbit may help avoid some of the challenges faced by insurance companies when they develop their own proprietary software code, such as:
(i) proprietary code may not be subject to external testing from the wider actuarial community
(ii) actuaries new to an employer may need to learn the proprietary system & have confidence in it
(iii) proprietary code is expensive to develop as highly skilled actuaries may need to be involved
(iv) expensive software packages are often used as a base platform to develop proprietary code

A principle to Orbit is to make the software as simple to use as possible whilst retaining required actuarial functionality. This approach enhances the actuary's intuitative understanding of the modelling process and the model output.
